George Brown College’s Wind Turbine Technician Certificate Program offers an opportunity to develop these skills, helping prepare individuals for the demands of this growing industry.

Globally, businesses increasingly require skilled Electronics Technicians to ensure efficient operations. With so many companies relying on advanced technology and automation to power their production lines, there’s a growing demand for technicians who can design, troubleshoot, and maintain the electronic systems that keep everything working efficiently.

Electronics permeate every aspect of our world, from kitchen appliances and aerospace to medicine and advanced manufacturing, and the technology never stays still. Recent years have seen the rise of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, solid-state power electronics, and advanced battery manufacturing technology. Emerging technologies include organic and biodegradable electronics (with organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) already in use), wearable medical devices, and pervasive artificial intelligence (AI).

If you come across the term, “engineering technician”, you may inadvertently make the incorrect assumption that it is just another term to describe an engineer. While there are some similarities between them, the average day of engineers can significantly differ from that of an engineering technician.  Though both are widely considered to be rewarding and challenging pursuits, a prospective student may favor one over the other based on their skills and aptitudes.

The spectrum of job opportunities opening up in the Electric Vehicle Industry is very broad. It will take hardworking technicians of many types to propel the industry into the 2030s, when governments plan to eliminate new gas power vehicles completely. Car companies will require workers in their factories to build and put on the road approximately 19 million cars in the US by 2030. All new car sales in Canada will be electric by 2035.

Learning to program the most powerful PLCs is an incredibly interesting and profitable skill to have, but it does come with challenges. The platforms can be complex and expensive, and the training software can be difficult to find. If you can learn the basics of an Allen Bradley PLC, you will gain valuable transferable skills that are highly sought after which can be applied to other platforms. 

Since COVID, online learning has emerged as a solution for practically all forms of training, including workforce development. Many community colleges are already supporting employers in strengthening their workforce by connecting with employers/organizations and offering a wide variety of work-related programs. Future jobs will need more qualifications than in the past, particularly in the areas of technology and manufacturing. This means employees must be adaptable and willing to meet these demands.

COVID has dramatically changed how and where we network professionally. In the past, we had many more face-to-face networking interactions through meetings, conferences, lunches etc. Post-COVID, we have less in person opportunities and a greater dependency on virtual communication platforms like video conferencing and social media to stay connected with people.
